Jab Tak Hai Jaan :Movie Review

Jab tak hai jaan

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma

Direction: Yash Chopra

My Rating: ***1/2 (out of 5)

Are you SRK fan? Are you the one who has enjoyed movies of Yash Chopra , mellifluous  background music, romantic songs, sacrifice for love then you will definitely love this movie. At some part it felt like Veer Zara part2. Let me tell you this movie is a Shah Rukh Khan show completely. Two lead actress and one actor, it was expected to be love triangle and it was.  Many predictable scenes in first half and also in second yet you get people to love your movie is nothing less than class. You will find the glimpse of previous movies of srk in this. Like one from Kal ho na ho where he walks over the bridge rally, one from Kabhi Alvida Na Kehnas song Mitwa. The areas where movie succeeds is the best acting, great screen play, wonderful music which you keeps on humming till you go to bed. The music is already hit and was topping the chartbusters with songs like “Heer”, “Challa”, “Jiya re”.

Story starts with SRK as Samar Anand as struggler in London, where he works as waiter-singer to earn.  He meets Meera – Katrina kaif when he was cleaning the snow outside church.  And as typical Yash Chopra movie, Meera and Anand falls in love.  There comes the twist and Meera finds that she was risking Anand’s life and ask god to keep him alive from the accident he met and in return made a promise not to meet Anand again. In reply Anand starts risking his life by joining Indian Army bomb squad where he diffuses bombs without using suite. Meanwhile he meets Akira-Anushka, discovery channel reporter who while making documentary on Anand falls in love with him and finds the reason why he risks his life.

Movies seems little bit from old time. But after 8 years of hiatus, Yash Chopra made a remarkable comeback if not epic. The kissing scenes in movie were to make Salman jealous instead of sparking romance between Srk and Kat. Because we know the romance lies in Srk’s eyes and his facial expressions.

Had Srk not been 47 and had it not been 3 hours long, it was sure blockbuster. Movie fails to score on some parts. Story could have been made stronger. The first half could have been shorten. Entry of Anushka as actress could have been made little earlier because she was so filled with life which might have written off the boredom first half was creating. Katrina, you cannot be a successful and critically acclaimed actress if you keep riding on your look. You have to learn acting, show some expressions.  Srk, you made an attempt by having a dance scene but not good enough.  Anushka , congratulations for scoring full marks. No doubt the deal with yash raj films has catapulted your career unlike sonakshi sinha.

Yash Chopra was known to take unusual route make a movie. I am happy that he hasn’t followed the viral trend going on in Bollywood- make movies from south Indian movies. JTHJ has a soul and a strong identity unlike most Rs 100 crore grossing mainstream and commercial films coming out of Bollywood pitched as “Masala entertainment”.

However, those are minor issues in what is otherwise, a beautiful tale of love and longing. Here is a fitting farewell to a master of romantic movies, Yash Chopra, who once again, with his muse, Shah Rukh Khan, takes you into his world of unflinching love, hoping you get lost in it. Basically, if you’re planning to watch it, and i think you should, don’t go expecting some path breaking classic like a DDLJ, Kabhi Kabhi ,Dar, Lamhe , and you will definitely leave the theater with a smile on your face, having fallen in love with the movie!

And ya last but not the least don’t leave theater soon it’s over.  Tribute paid by Yash Raj Films in the end makes u give standing ovation to king of romance.

My Rating: ***1/2 (out of 5)

Indian Media 2: Paid Journalism

I was wondering what to write, was searching for subject to write an article about. I went to facebook, the best hangout place and read a status by one of my college friend. “A fortnight ago all the news channels were like ‘ We are the first one to expose Gadkari ‘…and now they are saying that Anti-Gadkari campaign was started by Modi because Gadkari was coming in his way to the centre…( all this despite Gadkari has already sidelined himself from the race to become the PM )Clear manifestation of paid journalism and HEIGHTS OF INSANITY !!” And hence the topic for the discussion was found. Indian Media 2: Paid Journalism.

We all know everything and everyone in this world is about money. It is one of the most influential things when it comes to decision making. If intersection of the dreams of all the human being is to be taken then money will be one of the things as the answer for sure. The last thing we would have wanted to get corrupted was journalism. Media plays an essential role in building an opinion. They should be entity providing facts and figures and let people judge what is true and what is false. Let people have their own opinion over the matter. But in case of modern media, the core of the journalism is lost and has resulted into business. Previously we had seen education becoming booming business in India (theme of Revolution 2020, by Chetan Bhagat). The latest to join the league is media.

In ideal situation, primetime shows were supposed to have a debate on stories that might concern indigenous, asking people at the top of the pyramid to have their opinion about it. The anchor was supposed to provide the facts and figures to determine the intensity of the topic being debated. And let people decide which step is ideal and hence to be taken. But what happens in India is, anchor comes with premeditated mind, and takes the debate in the direction he wants. Any naysayer can conclude that the anchor was biased towards particular propaganda and hence the dialectical talk was nothing but an effort to support his views. The shocking part here is, the media houses are owned by politicians and hence it is quite obvious that their anchor’s view inclines with their owner’s political party’s views.

The protagonist of the story is TRP (Television Ration Point). In case of tv serials or commercials, importance of TRP can be understood but for media, its bizarre. It creates the competition which we are better off with. Episode of Nirmal Baba purchasing television space to propagate his superstition is recent to join the series of experiments news channel has executed to increase their TRPs. No doubt the TV space was purchased but that does not mean they promote such superstition. It questions the root of media, the credibility of media.

Nirmal Baba

The exponential growth in number of news channel in India itself suggests huge pool of money, many of which are owned by politicians. For politicians, it is win-win situation. This is perfect business model for them to dispose their black money and also a platform to have forced opinion by their puppets-anchors. On number of news channel, Subhash Chandra, chairperson of Zee Entertainment Enterprises and promoter of Essel Group that there was no room for so many news channels, and that there would be correction in the industry soon.

Recently Jindal group of steel sued Zee over corruption. Naveen Jindal accused them for asking money for not showing story of their organizations involvement in the Coal scam.

Not only Indian media, the biased nature of media is associated with western world too. Wikileaks has provided enough evidence that has shown the truth behind the Afghan war diaries, the Iraq war logs and Cable-gate. What was previously broadcast was biased truth, serving western countries propaganda.

Julian Assange

The answer to all is internet which provides uninhibited, uncensored, and unbiased information. It has made everyone journalist. Julian Assange founder of wikileaks has taken this to a new level. Attempts are being made to regulate internet too, which is an attempt to snatch the freedom of speech from common man. It should be seen as vicious attempt by people at the top of the pyramid to loot people. If the bill to regulate internet get passed through parliament, that will be the end to the freedom of common man. And India should not be called as democratic country anymore.

Test of TEST (cricket)

Test Cricket

When it comes to cricket, test cricket is the ultimate test of cricketers understanding of the game.   Be it strategically for captain or be it technically for bowler/ batsman.  Ask any die hard cricket fan, even during the era of 21st century, people spend time to watch 5 day long test match and awaits the result. Ashes is the most watched and highly anticipated cricketing season not only in Australia and England but throughout the world. In august 2011 when Indian cricket team toured England, right from the first test it was evident that Indians were not prepared and series was going to be one sided. But attendance was indicating something else. According to Sachin Tendulkar, thanks to t20 cricket more and more tests are ending with the result. The number of draw matches has reduced. Targets in excess of 350 are chased at ease. Few decades ago scoring 400 in a day was the dream ride. But once again thanks to t20 cricket batsman are adding innovative shots in their arsenal and making that 400 target achievable.

Test Cricket

Then why the best of the format is under threat. Why International Cricket Council (ICC) has to interject the idea of day night test cricket. Why to disturb something which is in equilibrium? In this case also like DRS (decision review system) ICC has left the final verdict on the respective boards to decide to implement it. BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) had already tried day-night test cricket. In subcontinent where the game is seen as religion, night test match doesn’t seem to fit in. Due factor is something which plays crucial role under lights. The basic logic behind putting this idea is the post work hour, where turn out of the crowd is expected to increase.  This clearly indicates the business oriented approach of ICC where they would like to bag more money from broadcasters and advertisers.  But I don’t think this will pull the crowd. True fan is always going to watch his team play irrespective of time during which they play.

Looking at the roadblocks for the test cricket, upcoming series are very important for future of test cricket. Subcontinent has the biggest fan following for the game. Hence the series between India and England is very important. If series becomes one sided like the one of 2011, then ICC might have to change bigger steps then above mentioned. Not only India England series but also the series between Australia and South Africa is going to be mouth-watering.  The coming two months when India will host England and then Australia will be guest to India. This is the time for Indian team to establish the lost faith of the fans in the team again. And try to make the test cricket the best format again.

Hoping for some competitive test cricket ahead between the giants of the game.

Indian Media: Crossing the height of stupidity

US Election 2012

It was an election time in the United States Of America (USA), the leader in world economy. Country decisions of whose president has a global impact. In many ways it was very important battle between democratic Barack Obama asking for “four more years” and republican Mitt Romney, asking questions over credibility over eloquent incumbent’s promises. Hence it was perfect recipe for Indian media which was running short of masala stories.
Indian media started talking about Obama vs. Romany from week starting 4th may 2012 and it went on till 9th may 2012 (that too because of one more press conference by IAC activist Arvind Kejriwal). Whereas US media started talking about the election on 5th may 2012 and till noon on 7th may 2012 the stories were over and they moved on. But we were still fighting over the result of the election whether it was good for India or not. (Here started talking implies dedicated bulletins for entire day.) Why so fuss about something which doesn’t concern us at that extent. Doesn’t matter if it is Romney or Obama, It is quite obvious that they would like to keep American jobs in their own country during the time when unemployment rate is at its peak. Top 10 treading topic on twitter had featured Obama or US election but there is very few portion of Indian population who were worried about the outcome. How many of you were actually aware about the flood in Andhra Pradesh, which inundated thousands of acres of crop lands. Death toll has reached 45. Wish we were worried about our own garden before talking debating about the gardener of garden which is not even in our neighbourhood. The US media started, debated, declared and moved on. But the Indian media started, debated and debated and debated and … I remember it was evening of 7th may, when I was with my dad changing the channels and going through the news channels, CNN was showing the story of earthquake in USA, New Mexico, But to my surprise Indians weren’t showing the story of Andhra Pradesh I just mentioned.

Floood in AP
The typical Indian media doesn’t stop here. Rajdeep Sardesai, the winner of the best anchor award by ITA has broken all the record. I don’t know when last time he woke up at four in the morning to cover a national story. May be four years ago when Obama got elected for his first term. Here is one tweet , wish he gets the language LakshmishaKS a tweeter user tweeted “@sardesairajdeep Thank you for your analysis and providing such minute details of the US elections, was really helpful for my life” (source: mediacrooks.com).
It is not about Indian media going berserk after US election. They have the habit of exaggerating every story. And it is nothing but part of the typical Indian mentality. The nominee for prime ministerial candidature has started before 48 months ago of the general election. In India , held general elections to the 15th Lok Sabha in five phases between 16 April 2009 and 13 May 2009.Add two more weeks debating the post-election issues like voters turnout. Add two more weeks debating the pre-elections issues. Add two more weeks before the actual results are declared. Add two more weeks for possible government combination. Add… so there was no aberration when US election debate lasted more then their counterparts in US.
They misinterpreted the line “India me sirf do cheez chalti hai ,ek bollywood dusra cricket.” Hence they try to present every story in a dramatic manner. The tagline is told three times like the one in K series serials of Ekta Kapoor (even she has moved on). The news is hammered million times on bulletin to make watcher accept their view. In India every news channel is number one. I don’t know how many surveys are done annually to keep every media house number one. The list is topped by India tv which provides the humor even faking news fails sometimes to do. Moreover faking news normally make articles over humans. But India TV has some innovative way to entertain their viewers (?!!?). I will have one dedicated article to describing the supremacy of them in humor.
The article touched upon many aspects of Indian Media which I will try to elaborate in my upcoming articles. Provide your feedbacks in the comment field below.

Tweaking Probability Equation

I am known as motivational guru in my friend circle. People call me when they are low on confidence. But what I tell them is similar. I always repeat this example. I would like to state it here. It is amalgamation of two theories, one the theory of attraction, two the theory of probability. I combine these two simple theories to form a solution. And which many find quite effective.

The first one, the theory of attraction also known as the law of attraction, says that we attract the mould our one future by attracting things we are thinking about. And also by not attracting things we don’t want. This theory has been around since ages but I got familiar with the same by reading book, “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne. Thought it sounds very simple but to put it in practice is an arduous task and that is where the difference between Gold medallist and Silver medallist lies. In 1985, Pawel Lewicki had conducted an experiment at the University of Warsaw. He asked students to select a picture of a woman from two. Call them picture X and picture y. The probability of getting any picture getting selected over here is 50-50. But in another attempt, he tried to influence the selection process. He asked woman who resembled the one in picture Y to have an interaction with the students. And there is no doubt the outcome was biased. And more students ended up selecting Picture Y. This is a simple way to say what power this law has. The life is always governed by such simple laws. If we break the complexity of life in smaller modules; modules of years, months, days, moments, we will find that the life is too easy to be lived in the moment without wondering and getting worried about the future. The life is all about applying this simple theory at the grassroots level.

The second theory is known as the theory of probability. This one is simpler than the previous one. Every tenth grade students knows about this. If we think about the outcomes of any event, be it tossing up the coin or rolling the dice. Every possible outcome has same likelihood. The probability of getting heads is 50 %, probability of getting 1 on dice is 16.66%.

If we combine above mentioned theories, the event that is about to happen in our life also has the same likelihood. A student going for exams, sets a target for himself, there are two possibilities. Either he achieves target or he does not. Then why there are so many people in the world who fails to achieve what they want? It is obvious that any student would like to be 90% per cent holder or at least not a failure. Then why the outcome of simple probability theory is biased. The answer is in the theory of attraction. We always have the fear of society. In book “the secret”, Rhonda Byrne asks us to act as if we have already achieved what we have been wanting to. The problem with this implication is fear of what would happen if we fail to do so. Society will start bullying us and so on. And that is where we are attracting the negative energy and giving weightage to what we don’t want. And the result of probability get biased towards something that we don’t want. The universe is mirror, it simply reflects what we have been uttering but in terms of action. Then what should we do to avoid such humiliation and yet avoid the fear of getting worse. The solution lies in having someone special in our life, which would not overreact even if we don’t reach there.

We are human being and “Too err is human nature”. Hence in our pursuit of excellence we might find ourselves off the target sometimes. I would like to share my experience where I was preparing for competitive exam.  To get into the top institute, it was quite obvious to score 99%percentile. I scored 45%percentile in first few mocks. Even in 10th such mock test I was off the target. But what kept me going was the flaw in human nature which I quoted earlier. I kept telling myself “I am improving, don’t worry everybody makes mistakes, I will improve” and the energy kept me moving. The result was 98%percentile in 19th mock. It is all about getting positives from wherever you can and keep working.

Given the choice between favourable result and pathetic outcome, we would like to get the former but we keep wondering about the world where we always think , what would happen if second outcome happens and hence we disturbs the probability equation. It is better to get into ground without any predilection about the result and keep doing the best. If we do the best, give our best shot, we will get only and only positive outcome.

Ideally, the equation of probability could be written in following manner.

 P(A) + P(A’)=1.0

But the mentioned theory might help us in tweaking the equation a little.

[P(A)*Belief that you will get it] + [P(A’)*fear that you will not get it]=1.0

Here,’ belief’ and ‘fear’ are mutually exclusive. If you believe you can achieve it then fear of not getting becomes zero and vice-versa.
